Luther, Mary Elizabeth

Mary Elizabeth Luther (Kowalczyk) of Longwood at Oakmont, formerly of Penn Hills and Coupon, PA, age 84, passed away on December 30, 2020 due to complications from liver cancer of the bile duct. Beloved wife of John M. Luther (deceased), mother of Melissa McLerran, John (Holli), Maria Killian (Joe) and Joe (Tracey Vogel); loving “GrandMary” to Sean (Lauren) and Michael McLerran, Jessup (Brittany) and Hennessey Luther, Joey (Liz), Sarah and Joshua Killian and Cole and Zofia Luther; daughter of the late John and Lottie Kowalczyk; sister of Dolores Bricca of New Windsor, MD along with the late Teresa ("Te"), Francis ("Sonny"), John ("Yoush") and Marcella Kowalczyk; aunt to many nieces and nephews; and cherished loved one to many dear friends, neighbors and extended family. Mary graduated from Altoona High School and was crowned Ashville’s Fire Queen in 1954 and then proceeded to earn her RN from the Altoona Nursing School and work at both Presbyterian and Mercy Hospitals in Pittsburgh, before retiring to be a full-time mom and then grandmother. Her grandchildren meant the world to her as she enjoyed hosting "Camp GrandMary" for her grandchildren. She was an active member of St. Susanna's Church and Prayer Group (Penn Hills), Penn Hebron Garden Club, Red Hat Society, Meals on Wheels (Penn Hills), Penn Hills PTA, golfing with girlfriends in their Golden Girls Golf League along with annual trips to FL and card club (bridge). She was such a fan of Pittsburgh sports teams (Steelers, Penguins, Pirates) that her wardrobe was significantly Black n’ Gold (along with her patriotic red, white & blue)! She consistently attended her children and grandchildren’s youth sport activities and music events; often with her trusty cowbell in hand. After her husband of almost 48 years, John, passed in 2016, she moved and became active at Longwood at Oakmont on various committees, organizing group outings to see her favorite singer, Josh Groban, and part of the Kazoo Band. She was the consummate hostess, loved telling jokes to create laughter and joy and was constantly surrounded by numerous “best friends.” Mary was described by her friends as a one-of-a-kind, classy lady, and "everyone who can call her friend are the lucky ones". She brightened the room everywhere she entered. One of her favorite sayings was “Life is not a dress rehearsal” and she lived her life in that spirit. She truly felt that it was not the years in your life that mattered, but the life in your years. Mass of Christian Burial and a memorial celebration for Mary will be planned for late summer 2021. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to "Penn Hills Senior Center", at 147 Jefferson Road, Penn Hills, PA 15235. Please note in the memo: "Home Delivered Meals in the name of Mary Luther". This donation will be used to serve Meals on Wheels that Mary faithfully served over the years. Please send condolences to www.burket-truby.com .
