Gates, Barbara Eleanor

BARBARA ELEANOR GATES Age 96, of Longwood at Oakmont, formerly a longtime resident of Calgary, Canada, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 27, 2021. Daughter of the late Irene and John Maclean. Beloved wife of almost 30 years of the late John Garrett Gates and his widow for over three decades. Loving mother of Jennifer (Martin) Calihan and John (Mike DaenKhanob) Gates. Beloved grandmother of Maclean, Trip, Isabel, and Jack Calihan. Sister of the late Lois (John) Edelson and Marion (John) Whitehead. Aunt to many, but especially those who resided in Calgary: Marilyn (Bryant Tomomoto), Davis, and Donald (Cathy) Whitehead; and the late Peter Whitehead. Great aunt to many, but especially those who resided in Calgary: Tara and Jillian Tomomoto; and Lindsay, Alicia, and Will Whitehead. Barbara was a pioneering businesswoman, running a family business — a produce brokerage company — beginning in 1948, in the era before women were allowed to wear slacks. (She was an early adopter on the slacks front!) Her second successful career was in residential real estate. She volunteered for the Junior League of Calgary, the Canadian Cancer Society, and the Rotary Ann’s. Barbara loved to golf and was a member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club for more than three decades. She enjoyed curling, bridge, and fitness activities at The Glencoe Club for over 75 years. Her sense of adventure led her to travel the world. She loved it all — Egypt, South Africa, Burma, Cambodia, and Peru were among her exotic destinations, but Scotland (home of Clan Maclean) was her sentimental favorite. Barbara had a great sense of style and loved fashion and décor. She never missed a good party. She was elegant, feisty, and quick to laugh, even at herself. The family will celebrate Barbara’s life at a memorial service in June or July. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (https://curalz.org/giving/donate) or the Alzheimer Society of Canada. (https://support.alzheimer.ca/site/Donation2).
