Davison, Hendrina

Hendrina (Reeny) D. Davison passed away peacefully on March 26 at the age of 75. Beloved wife of James E. (Jim) Davison for 50 years, she was born in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, to the late Thomas and Hendrina (van den Dolder) de Vos. When she was seven, the family moved to Hamilton, Ontario, and later to Sunnyvale, California. Reeny graduated from San Jose State majoring in German and earning a California teaching certificate. She also studied in Berlin through the Junior Year Abroad program. Returning to the Netherlands, Reeny took a bilingual position, teaching German in a Dutch high school in Amsterdam, and later Dutch and English as a Second Language at the International School. She met Jim there, and they were married in 1971. After moving to Pittsburgh, she completed a Master’s degree in German Literature and a certificate in English as a Second Language at the University of Pittsburgh. She taught German at Bayer Corporation and subsequently developed a program for science education for grades K-6 in Allegheny County schools. In 1994, the program became an independent non-profit, ASSET Inc., with Reeny as Founding Director. With large grants from the State of Pennsylvania, ASSET expanded to other regions of the State and received national recognition for educational reform. Reeny also completed an Ed.D. at Duquesne University. In 2000, she was named one of Carlow University’s Women of Spirit. After retirement, for several years she taught English annually at the La Croix New Testament Mission in Haiti. In her final years, she taught international students at Church of the Ascension in Shadyside. Reeny loved reading enriching novels, traveling to foreign destinations, biking and hiking, and relaxing in warm sunny locations - like Bahamian islands! She will be remembered for her ready smile and infectious laugh, her enthusiasm for life and love of stimulating conversations, her dedication to improving education for children and adults, and her loyalty to friends and family. Reeny is survived by her loving husband, Jim, three sons, Timothy (Kate), Andrew (Jenifer), and Scott (Christina), and six grandchildren, Claire and Pete, Aidan and Jenevieve, Sophie and Chase, all of whom she loved dearly. She had five sisters, Grietje (Benny, deceased) de Jonge, Annelies (Paul) de Jonge (deceased), Margaret (Tom, deceased) Escamilla, Wilma (Craig) Manchester, and Joanne (Rick) Pyl (deceased). Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME CREMATION & ALTERNATIVE SERVICES INC. 421 Allegheny Ave. Oakmont. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 31, at 1:00 p.m. at Church of the Ascension, 4729 Ellsworth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH. Interment will be private for the family in Allegheny County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to food distribution at the La Croix mission (Friends of Haiti, PO Box 1441, McMurray, PA 15317), or professional development at ASSET Inc. (assetinc.org).
