Burket-Truby Funeral Home of Oakmont

Smith, Alberta

Oakmont’s Candy Lady January 7, 1932-October 29, 2022. It comes with great sadness that on October 29, Alberta Smith, 90, formerly of Penn Hills, entered eternal rest. Alberta was the eldest child of Agnes and Alberto Caruso. Alberta was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and business owner. Other than her family, one of her greatest joys of life was being the owner of Sweet Heart Candies in Oakmont for over 40 years. She was the wife of the late “Admiral” Andrew J. Banas to whom she had five children. She remarried and was the wife of the late pro golfer “Herky” Smith. She was preceded in death by her daughter Teresa (Banas) Azurin, brother Thomas Caruso, and sister Cecelia “Chichi” Cantine. She is survived by sisters Eleanor “Lee” Verner and Frances Hickey of Springdale. Also are her children Linda Banas of Oakmont; Andrew (Linda) Banas of Beverly Hills, FL; Tracy John (Karen) Banas, Mark (Diana) Banas all of Penn Hills; and grandchildren Jennifer Dixon-Fitzner (Robert) of Tarpon Springs, FL; Jacqueline Lamghari (Oualid), Las Vegas, NV; Julianna Kerns, Oakmont; Alyssa and Alex Banas (Desirée) of Florida and the late Austin Banas; Charles & Lauren Azurin, Charleston, SC; & Christina Azurin, Manhattan, NY; Tiffany Gormley (Jeff), Orlando, FL; TJ (Suzanne), State College, PA; & Taylor Banas, Arlington, VA; Michelle Banas, Mesa, AZ. Alberta was a great-grandmother to Brooke Austyn Banas and another great-grandchild due in March 2023. Alberta was an aunt and a friend to so many others. Mrs. Smith didn’t just own a candy store. She owned an Oakmont institution. She stated that retiring at age 85 and closing Sweet Heart Candies in 2017 was her only regret. She considered her customers family. She enjoyed traveling to attend golf tournaments in which her husband, Herky, participated. Friends & family are welcome for a memorial visitation on Tuesday, November 8th from 2pm-6pm at BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME CREMATION & ALTERNATIVE SERVICES INC. 421 Allegheny Ave. Oakmont, PA. A blessing service will be held at 6 p.m. at the conclusion of the visitation in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to the Beaver County Humane Society or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
