IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Barend "Ben"
Stadler Louw
November 30, 2025
After 89 full years, Barend (Ben) Stadler Louw of Barkly East, South Africa passed away peacefully on the 30th of November after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. He will be lovingly remembered by his friends around the world, and especially by his family — his children, Marti, Marc and Babita, grandchildren Mitra and Nikou, his first wife Francisca and devoted partner of many years, Nonie.
Ben was an avid reader, runner and sailor who cherished the camaraderie and challenge of golf throughout all his years. Trained as an electrical engineer in the early years of computing, he traveled the world managing the installation of control systems to automate mine shafts, parimutuel betting, congressional voting, and national power grids in places as far flung as Spain, Egypt, Hungry, China and Israel; and along the way he met many fascinating people whose company he thoroughly enjoyed. Ben lived for many years and raised his family in Deephaven, Minnesota, then moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to be close to his daughter and grandchildren who knew him as Oupa. He was a treasure to us all, always making the world a better place through his care.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Alzheimer Disease Research Center (ADRC) at the University of Pittsburgh, which endeavors to understand and mitigate the disease, and support families with trustworthy information over the life course.
