Obituary

Ben M. Malone, 86 formerly of Boalsburg, Pa passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2025, in Fox Chapel Concordia.

He was born June 18, 1938, in Coburn, Pa a son of the late Basil Maxwell Malone and Maebelle (Winkelblech) Malone Schreckengast.
Ben worked for HRB Singer which was then bought by Raytheon Technologies for over 35 years as an electrical engineer and program manager.  He designed, built and supported radio satellite surveillance equipment at the height of the Cold War.  Although he was not in the military, he worked on defense government contracts, and their operations were highly confidential.  The job required travelling to many US military bases for installation or support both domestically and abroad.  Some locations include Guam, Scotland, Diego Garcia, Seattle, Maine, Nova Scotia, Singapore and of course Washington, DC.
He received Certificate of Recognition from the Director of National Reconnaissance Office for his work on the Poppy satellites which flew from Dec 1962 – August 1977, intercepting millions of signals from Soviet land- and sea-based radars.  The intelligence information was proven critical to winning the Cold War.  He also received a Letter of Commendation from US Navy Captain R W Jerome, Operations Officer, for his work on Classic Wizard Processing Suites at the Aerospace Defense Facility from June 1, 1995 – October 1, 1996, which was the first of its kind.
Ben was an active and long-time member of St. John's United Church of Christ of Boalsburg.  He also attended and was treasurer of Trinity United Church of Christ in Centre Hall.  He was active within his community, volunteering for Meals on Wheels, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and Advisory Council, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 1600 where he was awarded the Elk of the Year 1977-1978.  In addition, he was the former Harris Twp. Supervisor and Centre Region Council of Government Chairman in 1982.
He was a golf enthusiast, both as a player and attended several US Opens, US Senior Opens, and Masters tournaments.  He was a son of a schoolteacher, education and involvement in the community were important to him.  He was a member of the Bald Eagle School District Pen Pal, a program matching seniors to elementary students and volunteered as a youth recreation league softball coach and chaperone for the State College Area High School Chorus and Marching Band.
Ben was an avid Penn State Football fan and season ticket holder traveling to many of the bowl games.  He was also a member of the Penn State Wrestling Boosters attending many of the away and NCAA championship matches.   He enjoyed attending the Grange Fair in Centre Hall, Pa and biking along PA Rails to Trails and the C&O Canal with his late wife and lifelong best friend Roger (Claire) Guisewite.
Ben was the husband of the late Sylvia (Hartley) Malone whom she married July 24, 1960, father of Sharon Carrigan husband Joseph of Sinking Spring, Sandra Cronin husband Jeffrey of Verona; grandmother of James Carrigan (Maggie Wu), Bridget Carrigan, Marissa Carrigan (Eli Grunwald), Sara Cronin, Jeffrey Cronin II, Renee Cronin, and Eric Cronin.
