Bernie Mittereder, Jr.

Bernard “Bernie” “Bean” Mittereder, Jr., 68, of Penn Hills, passed away Thursday, September 17, 2026 leaving behind a lifetime of kindness and unwavering devotion to family and friends. The quiet giant.

Born on July 22 to Bernard J. Mittereder, Sr. and Marie (Sullivan) Mittereder, Bernie lived a life grounded in loyalty, humility, and appreciation of the simple life. For more than 20 years, he worked at the Penn Hills School District, where his strong work ethic touched countless lives. Prior to his sickness, Bernie volunteered as an usher at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Oakland offering his time and service with the same humility that defined his life.

He was a big sports fan who especially loved the Montreal Canadiens and Alabama Crimson Tide football. He also enjoyed watching his favorite programs on the Game Show Network.

The annual movie nights watching the classics – The Wizard of Oz and The Santa Clause with his nieces, Mackenzie and Sidney will be forever cherished.

Bernie was a “kid at heart.” Many fond memories were gathered around the dining room table particularly Monopoly and hours of Bingo with his family and nieces. He never strayed from his Westwood Road family and cherished the annual “Mittereder-Sullivan” Christmas parties. Perhaps the most non-materialistic and humble person one could ever meet, Bernie taught those that life is rich with love and prioritized “Family first” - not lifestyle or excuses.

He is survived by his siblings, Edward (Valerie) Mittereder, Thomas Mittereder, Robert Mittereder (preceded in death by Lori Willis Mittereder), Kathleen Visgalio (Frank), Carol Joy (Rob), and Maureen Sheldon.

He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews, Melissa Mittereder, Patrick Mittereder, Mac Mittereder, Mackenzie Sheldon, Ethan Mittereder, and Sidney Sheldon. Bernie is also survived by several devoted cousins who visited him frequently while sick.

Bernie possessed a rare gift for finding contentment in life’s simplest moments. Gentle, caring, and had a natural connection with animals, especially his beloved German Shepherd, Sable, whose companionship brought him immense joy. If there’s a dog around – Bernie would befriend them.

Though Bernie’s presence will be deeply missed, his warmth, humility, and love for family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Friends and family will be received on Sunday September 20th, 2026 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME CREMATION AND ALTERNATIVE SERVICES, INC., 421 Allegheny Avenue, Oakmont, PA 15139.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 21, 2026, at 10:30 AM at Holy Family Parish – St. Irenaeus Church, 387 Maryland Avenue, Oakmont, PA 15139.

Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery, Verona, PA 15147.
