IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David "Moon"
Macarthur Mullen
November 6, 2025
David MacArthur "Moon" Mullen, 64, passed away on Thursday, November 6, in Los Angeles, California, surrounded by loved ones, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
David was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and later grew up in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. He loved sports throughout his life, especially golf and hockey. He was a lifelong Penguins and Steelers fan and was always certain he could coach both teams better than anyone on the bench or field. His quick wit and running commentary were part of who he was.
David began his professional life as an accountant before choosing to follow his creative instincts. He moved to New York City, where he discovered his place in design. He went on to become the founder and Creative Director of Save Khaki United, shaping the brand with his eye for simplicity, authenticity, and ease. He believed that good design should feel natural, honest, and lived-in. His work reflected who he was: thoughtful, purposeful, and deeply connected to American craft. In recent years, David continued his creative work in Los Angeles, building and expanding his vision with clarity and care.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Mullen and Elizabeth Jeanne Mullen.
David is survived by his partner, NiNi Hu, and his son, David Paul Mullen, as well as Julia Mullen, with whom he shared friendship and the joy of raising their son. He is also survived by his siblings Mary Lanham, Barb Mullen, Robert "Tiger" Mullen, Nancy "Moochie" Donatucci and her husband Rob Donatucci, Bryant "Ranger" Mullen, and Shea Mullen and her partner Thom Dillingham. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will always carry his influence and stories forward.
David lived with originality, humor, and heart. He was stylish without effort and complex in the best way. He had a distinct way of carrying himself. He didn't try to be interesting. He just was. His presence left an imprint on everyone who knew him.
Keep on truckin'.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at 10 AM at Plum Creek Cemetery. David will be buried with his mom, Elizabeth Jeanne Mullen as were his wishes. A Celebration of Life will follow with details to come.
In lieu of memorials, David's family suggests memorials to https://www.engage.ucla.edu/give/426345/#!/donation/checkout or a charity of one's choice.
