David Charles Uhrin, age 79, formerly of Blackridge and Mt. Pleasant, PA passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in his Oakmont home on Monday April 29, 2024. Son of the late Dorothy (Junick) and Frank Uhrin, he was born on March 18, 1945. He is survived and will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of 55 years, Linda (Steudler) Uhrin, his daughter, Christina Palladino and her husband, Donald of Oakmont, his granddaughters Gina and Eva Palladino, sister, Dorothy Cousins (Bob), brother, Francis "Bo" Uhrin (Janice), sister-in-law, Nancy Callahan (Tom), brother-in-law, Fred Steudler (Judy), cousin Bob Uhrin of New Jersey, his nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and two great-great nephews, as well as his faithful companion, Teddy, his Burmese cat. He was preceded in death by his loving in-laws, Howard and Mary Jane Steudler, dear friends, Randy and Marilyn Klawiter of South Bend, Indiana, and uncle, Paul Roberts.
David graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1967 with a degree in geology, thus beginning a lifetime of love for all things Notre Dame. David taught Earth Science early in his career at Fox Chapel High School, Carlow College, and Penn State New Kensington. David received a master's degree in geology from The Ohio State University in 1973. In 1985, David began his own business, Coalbed Methane Consulting. Working as a consulting geologist for the coal and gas industry, primarily in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia, David and his field assistants Paul Roberts and Tom Callahan explored the "wilds of the coal fields." David was a charter member of the Pittsburgh Coalbed Methane Forum, now the North American Coalbed Methane Forum, whose mission is to promote mine safety and increase production of coalbed methane as a worldwide energy resource.
Those who met him, even briefly, remembered the friendliness and warmth he brought to every conversation, showing a genuine interest in the lives of those around him. David would often quote Dr. Seuss: "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened," and in this vein, he lived his life embracing time spent with family, friends, and loved ones. The people he loved felt his support constantly, as he never stopped expressing his compassion through word and action. He was especially proud of and devoted to his granddaughters. He enjoyed English sports cars, feeding the birds in his backyard feeders and watching Rocky and Bullwinkle and Star Trek. He loved the Harry Potter series and enjoyed discussing its subtleties and deeper meaning. David loved holidays but especially the anticipation of the Christmas season. Christmas music, picking the perfect tree, and watching and reading various versions of A Christmas Carol were just a few ways he looked forward to Christmas with his family. Above all, David was a loving and understanding husband, father, uncle, and grandfather and a supportive, nonjudgmental friend.
The family would like to thank his caring physicians, the Dementia 360 Care Team of Deanna and Amy, as well as Monairah and Lil, his dedicated hospice team. Finally, our deepest appreciation goes to Mary Jo Santicky, lifelong friend, for her selfless care and compassion.
The family held a private visitation followed by burial at The Verona Cemetery in Oakmont.
