Denny Ann Wharton Criss

Longwood at Oakmont

Denny Ann Wharton Criss, 77, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 6, 2026.

Born on November 16, 1948, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Denny was the beloved daughter of William Wharton and Madeline Murray Wharton.

Denny was raised in Aspinwall and graduated from Fox Chapel Area High School in 1966. In 1971, she married the love of her life, Russell Caldwell Criss, and together they raised four children: Kate, Liz, John, and Louise. Following Russ's unexpected passing 27 years ago, Denny demonstrated remarkable resilience, strength, and unwavering devotion to her family as she carried on with grace.

Adored by her four grandchildren, Hannah, Harrison, James, and Madeline, she would light up for all of them. Memorable outings included going to Phipps Conservatory, where each grandchild eagerly took a turn pushing her wheelchair through the beautiful gardens. She loved attending the sports games and musical performances of her grandchildren. These treasured moments reflected the special bond she shared with each of them.

To many, Denny was "Mama Criss," a name that reflects her love of opening her home to family and friends. She was truly a mother to all. Anyone was welcome-nieces, nephews, all of her children's friends. Whether for holidays, celebrations, or an ordinary afternoon together, her home was a gathering place filled with warmth, laughter, and love. She had a remarkable way of making every person she met feel special, loved, and accepted.

Denny is survived by her children, Kate (Scott) Parker, Liz (Jim) Criss Boyle, John (Megan) Criss, and Louise Criss (JT Bendel); her grandchildren, Hannah & Harrison Parker, James & Madeline Criss Boyle; and many extended family members and dear friends who will miss her deeply. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Russell Caldwell Criss.
