Dick Katzin, of Oakmont, PA, passed away on Thursday, January 4, 2024. He was born on October 28, 1934, in Newark, New Jersey, the only child of Eugene M. Katzin, a physician, and Ethel B. Katzin, a law graduate.
Dick graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor's degree in Zoology and began medical school at Cornell University Medical Center in New York City. He met his future wife, Loretta, while in New York. Dick left school to join the United States Marine Corps and married Loretta. As a Marine, Dick achieved the rank of First Lieutenant as an Infantry Officer. Dick and Loretta had two children while stationed at Quantico, VA and Camp Lejeune, NC. The family returned to New York for Dick to complete medical school, after which they moved to Pittsburgh, PA and then Oakmont, PA, where Dick and Loretta had twins. Dick began a career as an ophthalmologist, clinical professor, mentor, and sometime volunteer Deputy Sheriff, always remaining steadfastly committed to his wife, children, grandchildren, his close friends, and his fellow veterans, whom he continued to serve through the Department of Veterans Affairs well into his 80s. Dick was also an avid outdoorsman and always enjoyed working with his hands on building and repair projects. He and Loretta shared 64 happy years of marriage until her passing in March 2023.
Dick was a devoted physician, teacher, friend, and head of family. His humor and sense of adventure remained with him until the very end. He passed knowing that he was beloved by his family and friends. In his own words, he was at peace having accomplished everything he wanted to and was proud of his children and grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by those he leaves behind, who take solace in knowing that he passed peacefully and on his own terms.
Dick is survived by his sons Richard (Anne), James (Sharon), and Eugene (Katherine); his daughter Darcy (David); and nine cherished grandchildren.
Visitation with the family will take place on Saturday, January 27, 2024, from 2 - 5 p.m. at the BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME CREMATION & ALTERNATIVE SERVICES, INC., 421 Allegheny Ave., Oakmont, PA 15139.
