Eleanor ("Gishie") F. Scully of Squirrel Hill and Ligonier died July 12 surrounded by the love and prayers of her family. She was born October 27, 1930 in Pittsburgh, daughter of Dr. George Vance Foster and Eleanor Vail Lewis Foster. She is survived by her brother, Briar Foster and his family, all in Canada, her nephew George McCullough, whose mother Betty Blair, predeceased Eleanor, and her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Eleanor loved her garden clubs and other volunteer activities, she was a great cook, an accomplished golfer, tennis player, skier and adventurer.
Gishie attended Ellis School and graduated from The Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, NY. She was a graduate of Bennet Junior College in Milbrook, NY and attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. She married Arthur M. Scully, Jr in 1954 and taught at Shadyside Academy. She had four children; Ann L. Scully of Oakmont, PA (daughter, Emily Blasier), Arthur M. Scully (wife Debbie McLennan Scully) of Sun Valley, Id and their sons Dillon McLennan Scully and Morgan Rees Scully, Henry C. Scully of Ligonier, PA (son George and his wife Olivia and their three children Weylin, Finley and Shay and Henry's daughter Julia C. Scully and her husband Sam Carolan), and her third son Tim Scully (wife Deborah Deming Scully) of Edwards and Salida/Moffat, CO.
Eleanor loved the Foster family cottage and her Canadian friends and family on Peninsula Lake in Ontario. She spent time there almost every summer of her life, golfing, caddying for family when she was young, sailing, entertaining and working on cottage projects. She also loved going on trips with her husband and/or friends and family. As couples, they skied in Austria, Canada and Switzerland among other places. She went to Alaska with Arthur to work on a diorama for The Carnegie Museum of Natural History. She made wax impressions of native plants for the diorama while camping out.
She had a passion for wildlife and animals in general. She saved and found good homes for many a lost dog, baby rabbit, cat, and a bird frozen to a metal fence.
Gishie was a docent at Phipps Conservatory, a volunteer gardener at Canterbury Place in Lawrenceville, a member of the Garden Club of Allegheny County and its Parklet Committee, The Women's Committee of The Carnegie Museum of Art, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Seeders and Weeders Garden Club, The Pittsburgh Golf Club, Rolling Rock Club, and St. Michael's of the Valley Church in Ligonier.
A service to celebrate Mrs. Scully's life will be held at St. Michael's of the Valley Tuesday, August 6th at 11:00 am followed by a reception in the church Parish Hall.
Gifts in her honor may be made to Actions for Animals, Latrobe, PA or St. Michael's of the Valley Church, Ligonier. Arrangements entrusted to the BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME CREMATION AND ALTERNATIVE SERVICES, INC., Oakmont.
