Gary J. Matassa Sr., 78, of Oakmont, Pennsylvania, passed away on December 31, 2025. Known throughout Oakmont, Verona, and the surrounding neighborhoods as the trusted local handyman and beloved coach, Gary touched countless lives with his generosity, strength, and unwavering commitment to others.
For nearly 40 years, Gary worked at Edgewater Steel, where he forged lifelong friendships and earned the respect of everyone who knew him. Beyond his work, Gary was a pillar of his community, a man who could always be counted on, who kept his promises, and who lived by the simple but profound principle of doing what he said he would do. Whether leaving his own family dinner to help salvage someone else’s or coaching teams to victory, Gary was a hero in the truest sense of the word.
Fitness was a cornerstone of Gary’s life, and his strength, both physical and moral, made him seem almost immortal to those who loved him. He shared 54 wonderful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Laurie, and cherished his children, Gary (Leigh Baxter) and Denise (Brian Reed). His granddaughter, Samantha, held a special place in his heart, and their bond was one of life’s greatest joys for him. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Angelo and Mallie Matassa, and is survived by his brother Rick (Barb) Matassa and sisters Sandy (Richard) Savinda and Maureen (Greg) Caswell as well as numerous nieces and nephews. To his family and friends, Gary was more than a man raising a family—he was a steadfast presence, a source of strength, and a beacon of kindness.
In accordance with his wishes, Gary will not have a formal funeral service. His ashes will be scattered privately at a location he chose. May his memory live on in the countless lives he touched, and may he rest in eternal peace.
