Jay was born on June 23, 1939, in Glen Ridge, NJ. He was the son of Royal and Alvina Cleveland. After growing up in Glenridge, Jay moved to Camp Hill, PA in 1948. He attended the Camp Hill schools and graduated from Manlius Preparatory school. He then graduated from Weidner College in Chester, PA. After which he served in the U.S. Army. Upon fulfilling his time as a Lieutenant, he returned to Camp Hill, PA and joined the family business Cleveland Brothers Equipment Company. He was the President and then CEO of Cleveland Brothers.

In 1962, Jay married the love of his life, Sandra L. Cleveland, and together they built a beautiful family rooted in love and shared values. A devoted husband and father, Jay was blessed with two children, Laura Cleveland-Datesman, wife of Miles, and Jay W. Cleveland Jr., husband of Mary. His family continued to grow with the arrival of his beloved grandchildren, Jay W. Cleveland III, husband of Bella, Garrett Cleveland, Charlotte Cleveland, Sydney Cleveland-Datesman, and Addison Cleveland-Datesman, and a great-grandson, Jay W. Cleveland IV, who brought immense joy to his life.

Jay's professional journey began in 1961 at Cleveland Brothers Equipment Company, where he dedicated 40 plus years of exemplary service, rising to the esteemed position of President and CEO before retiring in 2004. His leadership and integrity left an indelible mark on the company and the industry, inspiring those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Jay was the President of the Camp Hill School District School Board; he was a member of YPO and President of the Pennsylvania chapter. Was the President of the West Shore Country Club. He was also President of Harrisburg Chamber of Commerce.

His hobbies included golfing, running, needle pointing and wood working. His most cherished time was spending time with his grandchildren at their sporting games, plays, concerts and family trips.

He was proceded in death by his parents and his sister Jean Kirchhoff, brother in laws Bill Kirchhoff, Sam Long, Forrest Long and his nephew Tom Kirchhoff.

The Cleveland family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all of Jay’s caregivers over the years, whose kindness and care were deeply appreciated.

Jay’s life is a testament to the power of love, family, and kindness. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched.

A private celebration of Jay’s life will be held in Pittsburgh.
