John (Jack) Oehrle, age 87 of O'Hara Township, passed away on January 15, 2025. He is predeceased by his wife, Lee R. Oehrle, of 53 years; son Scott (Maureen) and grandchildren, Aidan and Sophia of Fox Chapel and Daughter Jenna Rodrigues (Mark) and grandchildren, Jeremy, Sawyer and Johnathan of O'Hara. He is also survived by his older sister, Betsy Oehrle of Durban, South Africa.
Born in Monongahela and graduating from Monongahela High School, Jack attended Colgate University and then received a Medical Degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. While at Colgate, he met his wife Lee who was studying piano at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. They were married in Pittsburgh while Jack attended Medical School at Pitt.
The moved to Morgantown, WV for his medical internship and continued his medical training in the US Navy in both San Francisco and Seattle. Their Son Scott was born in Seattle and then Jack and Lee moved to Rochester, NY and finally returned to Pittsburgh in 1969 to complete residency at the Presbyterian University Hospital where he became a Clinical Pathologist. Their daughter, Jenna was born in Pittsburgh and after living in Shadyside, the Oehrle family raised their children in Mt. Lebanon.
He worked at Allegheny General Hospital under the guidance of his close friend and colleague, Dr. Robert Hartsock, who has been a great comfort in these last few weeks. In 1987, Jack became the director of the laboratory for Allegheny Valley Hospital and owner of ProLab. In the future, he would add Ohio Valley Hospital and Armstrong Hospital to the network of laboratories they directed. He was a dedicated physician and was never satisfied until he had made the diagnosis.
He and his wife built a home in O'Hara Township and moved from the South Hills to be closer to his new hospital in 1989 where he lived until 2023 when he moved to Longwood of Oakmont.
He loved sailing, tennis, singing in the church choirs of both Southminster Presbyterian and Fox chapel Presbyterian. He was an avid supporter of the environment and planted many trees at his home. Most of all he loved his wife, children and grandchildren.
Friends will be received at Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church from 9 -10:30 AM on Saturday, January 18, 2025. Immediately following, there will be a memorial service at 10:30 AM in the sanctuary. A private interment will occur at a later date.
