Leon (Leo) Gefert, age 94, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025. Born on December 2, 1931, Leo lived a long and meaningful life defined by dedication, service, and devotion to his family.
Leo was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia M. Gefert; his parents, Francis and Genevieve Gefert; and his brothers, Stanley Gefert, Edward Gefert, and Henry Gefert.
Leo proudly served his country in the United States Army, attaining the rank of Private First Class with Company B, 307th Military Police Battalion. After completing his military service, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He then built a distinguished career as an electrical engineer at Westinghouse, where he worked in the Airport People Mover Division, contributing his expertise to innovative transportation systems.
Outside of his professional life, Leo found great joy in gardening and construction projects, taking pride in working with his hands and creating things that would last. These pursuits reflected his patience, ingenuity, and love for building and nurturing—qualities that also defined how he cared for his family.
He is survived by his loving children: Frances “Kim” (Patrick) Connolly, Candy (John) Daffern, and Leon “LP” (Jill) Gefert. Leo was a proud and devoted grandfather to John, Matt, and Sam Connolly, and Megan and Henry Daffern, and a cherished great-grandfather to James Connolly.
Leo will be remembered for his steady presence, strong work ethic, and unwavering commitment to family and country. His life leaves a legacy of love, service, and integrity that will continue through generations.
Friends and family will be received on Sunday January 4, 2026, from 1-5 p.m. at the BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME CREMATION AND ALTERNATIVE SERVICES, INC., at 421 Allegheny Ave., Oakmont PA 15139.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held the following day, Monday January 5th, 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Parish- St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Verona.
