Mark D. Groggel, age 71, of Oakmont, Pennsylvania, passed away on January 5, 2026, surrounded by his family, after courageously overcoming multiple severe illnesses since the summer.
Mark was born in East Lansing, Michigan, and was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Mary (Harger) Groggel. He grew up with a strong work ethic and competitive spirit, playing football and graduating from Western Michigan University.
Mark was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose life centered around his family, home, and the simple joys that brought people together. He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Jody Groggel; his daughters, Amanda Groggel Trunzo (Anthony) and Rachel Groggel; and his cherished grandchildren, Isabel, Cameron, and Sophia Trunzo, who brought him immense pride and joy. Nothing made him happier than having his daughters move back to Oakmont in recent years.
Mark had an entrepreneurial spirit and owned several businesses throughout his life.
He loved golf, sports, sports betting, being at home, and—most of all—sharing laughter. His humor was a constant for those who knew him.
In retirement, Mark spent his time working at Oakmont Country Club, a place he truly loved. One of his proudest moments was working the range during the 2025 U.S. Open, an experience that meant a great deal to him and perfectly reflected his lifelong passion for the game of golf.
Mark will be remembered for his resilience, his steady love for his family, and his ability to find humor even in life’s hardest moments. He will be deeply missed and forever held in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday January 9 - 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Parish- St. Irenaeus Catholic Church in Oakmont. Everyone please meet at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mark’s memory to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
