Mary Lloyd Thompson

d. December 29, 2025

Allison Park

Mary Lloyd Thompson, 86, passed away peacefully in her home at Highpointe in Allison Park on December 29, 2025. Just days earlier, she had celebrated a joyful Christmas surrounded by her family — a final gathering filled with laughter, warmth, and the comforting presence of Blackie 5, her beloved dog.

Born on August 10, 1939, in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Mary Lloyd was the daughter of Wilmer and Mary Lloyd Thomson. Known affectionately as “Floyd,” she was the cherished wife of the late George H. Thompson Sr., predeceased in September 2015, with whom she shared a devoted and joyful marriage for 55 years.

She is survived by her children — George (Jane) H. Thompson Jr., Carolyn (Paul) Molingowski, and Susan (Tom) Ferguson — and by the nine grandchildren who brought her endless pride: Nicholas, Ted, Luke, Charlie, George III, Oliver, Molly, Libby, and Bennett. She is also survived by her sister, Ann Ellen Elmendorf of Indiana, and her sister-in-law, Margaret Ann Fowler of California, along with a large and loving extended family of nieces and nephews who shared her deep faith and her love of family.

Mary Lloyd graduated from West Chester High School before attending Dickinson College, where she joined Pi Beta Phi and — to the delight of all who knew her later — was a spirited cheerleader. It was at Dickinson that she met George, and in 1960 they married and began their life together in Pittsburgh.

They settled in Oakmont, joined Oakmont Country Club, and quickly built a circle of lifelong friends. Mary Lloyd had a gift for hospitality; her home was a place of welcome and tradition. She created memories that became family legend — cousins whisked off to Children’s Palace, “Grandma Camp” during vacation Bible school, and her famous chicken and noodles parties that everyone eagerly anticipated. Mary Lloyd moved to Highpointe in Allison Park in 2017 and loved her life there with many new friends and loving neighbors.

Anyone fortunate enough to meet Mary Lloyd, even once, recognized her generosity, her steadfast faith in God, her patriotism, and her unmistakable joy for life. She poured her energy into her community, serving on the Pittsburgh Symphony Association, the Oakmont Garden Club, the Pittsburgh Junior League, the DAR, and Plum Creek Presbyterian Church, where she was both a Deacon and an Elder, and numerous volunteer positions throughout her life experiences.

Her family referred to her as our own “Norma” Vincent Peale — a living example of the power of positive thinking. She had a rare and beautiful gift: the ability to see the good in every person and every circumstance.

There will be no viewing. Friends are invited to a celebration of Mary Lloyd’s life at 10:30am on Saturday, March 28th, at Plum Creek Presbyterian Church, 550 Center New Texas Road, Pittsburgh, PA, 15239. Arrangements were handled by Burket-Truby Funeral Home Cremation and Alternative Services, Inc,, Oakmont 412-828-3535. Donations may be made to Plum Creek Presbyterian Church Mission Fund in Mary Lloyd’s memory or to your charity of choice.
