Michele “Chele” Kuhn passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of her family, following a brief illness.
Michele was the heart of her family — a devoted wife, loving mother, proud Grammy, caring sister, aunt, and loyal friend. She is survived by her husband of 30 years, James Zelahy; her daughters, Christen Bovienzo and Jodi Trebilcock (Tim); her son by choice, John Caldwell III; her sister, Debby Malandra, and nephew, Anthony Malandra. Nothing brought Michele more joy than being “Grammy” to Tyler (fiancée Elizabeth Memo), Tanner, Dominic, Christopher, and Madelyn, who were truly the light of her life. She shared a unique and cherished bond with each of her grandchildren, celebrating every moment, conversation, accomplishment, and memory made together. She is also survived by James’ daughter, Erica Heisey (Scott), and her children, Evan and James, who held a special place in her heart as well as Jimmy Zelahy and his son Liam.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael Kuhn and Annabel (Strang) Kuhn. Born on May 29, 1944, Michele grew up in Oakmont and graduated from Oakmont High School in 1962. She attended Grove City College before earning her degree from Carlow College.
Michele dedicated many years of her career to UPMC, where she served as Director of Risk Management, before continuing her work at the University of Chicago Hospitals after moving to Chicago.
Michele had a gift for making people feel loved, welcomed, and remembered. She treasured the friendships she built throughout every stage of her life, from childhood and college to the lifelong friends who remained close to her through the years. She was a talented artist who expressed her love through the beautiful cards and paintings she created for family and friends.
Her happiest moments were often the simplest — sunny days spent by the pool; family vacations filled with laughter, long conversations, and time surrounded by the people she loved most. Her grandchildren each shared a unique and special bond with her and being their “Grammy” was one of the greatest joys of her life. Piper, Michele’s beloved dog, was her loyal companion who rarely left her side.
Michele will be remembered for her warmth, creativity, strength, and the unconditional love she gave so freely. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered every day.
Per her wishes, there will be no funeral home visitation or formal service. Instead, her family and close friends will gather privately to celebrate her life and the memories she shared with those she loved.
