Obituary

Orlando Frederico Gabriele, M.D., age 97 died peacefully at his Fox Chapel home on Thursday, November 14, 2024.  He was the son of the late Assunta (Cascia) and Federico Gabriele.  Beloved cherished husband to Denise Kalinowski, M.D. and former spouse of the late Margaret St. John.  Also preceded in death by his sister, Yolonda Kearns.  Survived by his children; Frederick (Mary) Gabriele, M.D. of Morgantown, W.V., Marguerite (David) Horvath, Esq. of Morgantown, W.V., Michael (Colleen) Gabriele, M.D. of Sewickley, PA, and Peter (Stephanie) Prosek, retired Navy Capt. of Georgia.   Grandfather of Isabella, Anthony, Dominic, Nicholas, Paige, Kyra, Ethan, Roman, and Arianna.
Also survived by his sister Anna Albanese of Providence, RI.

Orlando was a first-generation Italian American.  He proudly served his country in the Army Medical Corps in the laboratory.  He graduated summa cum laude from Brown University, then going on to Yale University to receive his medical degree in 1954 and completed his internship at Philadelphia General.  He returned to Yale for his radiology residency before becoming Chairman of Radiology at West Virginia University in 1972.  He taught at Yale and at the University of North Carolina.  Finally, Orlando became Chairman at UPMC Montefiore in Pittsburgh until his retirement at age 71.

Orlando was a guest examiner for the American Board of Radiology and authored more than 60 publications.  He was a diplomat of both the American Board of Radiology and the American Board of Nuclear Medicine.

"Gabe" was eminently respected for his diagnostic skills; he was a pioneer in angiography.  He kept pace with every new technological development, computerized tomography and MRI.  In the words of Dr. James Scatliff, who was a faculty member at UNC- Chapel Hill, "It took only one day of working with Dr. Gabriele to know that he knew twice as much as I did, and he was just a resident!  I do not believe that I have known any radiologist in my career with whom I would be more comfortable to have assess any patient exam done in our facility.  His knowledge of radiology and imaging was protean, and he shared marvelously with colleagues and trainees."  He always saw the positives in life and in everything and everyone.  Many trips to Italy, Spain, Iceland, and all across America were enjoyed with Denise.  Gabe's last trip was to Ireland at age 90.

Gabe leaves behind a legacy of family, work ethic, and profession desired by many but achieved by few.
Special sincere thanks to Adam of Care at Home Preferred for his care and attention to Gabe.  Also, very special thanks to the entire staff of Silver Lining Home Healthcare and in particular Leslie and Alyse.

The family held a private viewing, with a Celebration of Life to be announced at a future date.  Arrangements honorably handled by BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME CREMATION AND ALTERNATIVE SERVICES, INC., of Oakmont.
