Robert Thomas McDermott, 65, of Oakmont, previously of Vandergrift, passed away on May 15, after a courageous battle with sarcoma. Bob was born on May 28, 1958, to the late Robert and Joan (Ceraso) McDermott. He graduated from Kiski Area High School where he played basketball and tennis and more importantly met Anne, the love of his life. Bob went on to study history at Allegheny College and then received his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

In 1983, Bob began practicing law in Pittsburgh for the PA Office of Attorney General and worked in the Torts Litigation section as a Senior Deputy Attorney General. Bob was a devoted public servant with an extensive knowledge of and passion for litigation. A member of the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County, the American Inns of Court, and the Allegheny County Bar Association, Bob was a respected trial lawyer and colleague who provided valuable leadership and counsel to those with whom he worked. The mutual respect and camaraderie of Bob's coworkers enabled him to have a long and fulfilling career. Bob retired in October of 2023 after 40 years of service.

Bob was a member of St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church and also regularly attended Vandergrift Presbyterian Church. An active member of his community, Bob served on various boards through the years including the Valley Points YMCA and Victorian Vandergrift Museum Historical Society.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his in-laws, Burl and Sue Slaugenhaupt. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Anne, his children, Laura (Peter) Mullican, of Oakmont, Patrick (Erin) McDermott of Lakewood, OH, grandchildren Ethan and Emilia Mullican, siblings Thomas McDermott, Michael McDermott, Susan (Robert) Klingensmith, James (Lorrie) McDermott, and Todd (Gina) McDermott, brothers-in-law Michael (Karin) Slaugenhaupt, Richard (Meri) Slaugenhaupt, and several nieces and nephews.

Bob was remarkably generous, strong, and resilient. His personality was defined by his enthusiasm for learning, embracing new experiences, and sharing his adventures with others. He can only be described as a "life enthusiast" who brought an infectious energy and optimism to those around him. He embodied an inspiring example of positivity and determination to experience a fun and meaningful life, no matter the circumstances. His interests and hobbies are too numerous to name, but he will be fondly remembered for his love of good food, movies, music, trivia, sports, and family vacations. His support and encouragement will be greatly missed, especially his reliable presence at countless sporting events, performances, and recitals involving his kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews.

Friends and family will be received on Sunday May 19, 2024 from 2-6 p.m. at the BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME CREMATION AND ALTERNATIVE SERVICES, INC. at 421 Allegheny Ave. Oakmont, PA 15139.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday May 20, 2024 at St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church, 303 Franklin Ave. Vandergrift, PA 15690.  Everyone please meet at the Church.
