Obituary

William "Bill" J. Hetrick passed peacefully on February 24, 2024, in Oakmont, PA.  He was 92 years old.

Bill is preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife of 64 years, Joanne Bash Hetrick.  He is survived by his children Robert, James (Karen), and Molly (Mehdi Tadayon).  He was blessed to have three grandchildren – Marta (Justin Callies), Jahan and Jared – along with two great-grandchildren – Otto and Felix.

Born in New Castle, PA, Bill spent most of his life in Oakmont and Plum Borough.

Bill served in the Army during the Korean Conflict as a crypto analyst, specializing in the Czech, Russian, French and Finnish languages.

Bill had a 25-year career as Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President at Harmarville Rehabilitation Center.  He was an active member of the Hospital Financial Management Association, serving as President of the SW Pennsylvania Chapter.

Community service was always a priority and passion for Bill.  He was proud to serve as Board President for Alpha House – a residential drug and alcohol treatment center – and for The Bradley Center – an organization helping children who have experienced trauma, mental illness, and behavioral challenges.

Bill served in several leadership positions for the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh – serving as President of the Board of Trustees as well as attending several General Conventions.  He led a capital campaign in support of Calvary Camp.

Music was Bill's lifelong passion.  As a young person, Bill took the train from Oakmont to downtown Pittsburgh each Saturday to sing on KDKA radio with the Starlets on Parade. He was honored to sing in the National Cathedral and National Lutheran Choruses, in Washington DC and to be part of many music festivals throughout the years.  For 22 years, Bill served as choir director at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Oakmont.

After retiring from Harmarville Rehabilitation Center, Bill and Joanne purchased Yankee Doodles, a gift shop in Oakmont.
